Pixel: Jinks

Jinks naît en mars 1976, à Vevey en Suisse. Il est imprégné dès son enfance par l'œuvre artistique de son grand-père céramiste d’art, et de son père photographe pour Filipacchi. Il éduque ainsi son sens artistique et se dote d'un œil averti pour les images qui l'entourent.

 

A la fin des années 80, la musique et la culture Rap rythment la vie de Jinks.

Et c'est en 1994, qu'il est interpellé par des pochettes d'album magnifiant le graffiti, notamment celle de l'album «Chromatique» du groupe Sens Unik signée Lazoo (M.A.C.). Ayant un œil averti pour l'image, il est passionné par la photographie et par la vidéo, ce qui le pousse à suivre des études dans l'audiovisuel et à mener plusieurs stages comme touche à tout à France Télévision. Son travail de photographe, débutera à cette époque. Il travaille alors pour plusieurs magazines télés ou culturels, pour des festivals, ou pour des artistes qui captent son talent. Et cette pratique artistique ne le quittera plus.

 

En 2003, il se sent prêt à investir le milieu du graffiti, et se dénomme Jinks pour représenter avec humour toute la «poisse » qui lui colle à la peau. Travaillant avec d'autres graffeurs nantais, il se met en quête de dénicher à Nantes, tous les graffitis puis il les photographie. C'est ainsi, que la création d'un site internet dédié au graffiti nantais en 2004, lui vient comme une évidence. T.A.N.K. (Tous Artistes Nantais Konfondus) sera l'exposition de la culture graffiti nantaise. Succès réussi, car le site atteindra un million et demi de visiteurs fin 2009 ! Ne voulant pas se restreindre au graffiti, et voulant contribuer à la culture hip hop sur Nantes, Jinks décide de lancer en 2005, avec des amis, un fanzine reprenant l'actualité musicale et artistique hip hop. Le fameux journal s'intitulera « Apocalypse Nantes » et comportera 4 numéros tirés à 1000 exemplaires.

 

Parallèlement, il animera des ateliers graffs au sein de centres culturels de la région, auprès de jeunes entre 12 et 17 ans, jusqu'en 2009. Sa pratique du graffiti, s'exercera également sous des décorations libres ou d'happenings dont les commanditaires sont des quartiers nantais, des associations, des sociétés, des festivals ou des particuliers. Une façon pour Jinks de faire entrer son travail de façon pérenne, dans la culture graff de la région. Mais c'est véritablement, en 2007 que Jinks a LE DECLIC qui amorcera son œuvre actuelle et ses débuts d'artiste à part entière. Il découvre le travail de Jef Aérosol et Logan Hicks, deux célèbres pochoiristes.

 

Il insère alors des ébauches de pochoir sur certaines fresques de son collectif. Débordant d'inspiration, il décide de s'exprimer sur toile par des portraits de personnalités qui le touche positivement ou négativement dans sa conscience politique : Martin Luther King, Mandela, Bush...ou qu'il admire artistiquement : Andy Warhol, Basquiat... Il rend hommage également aux artistes nantais dont il a pu promouvoir le travail, à travers son fanzine : DJ Atom, Hocus Pocus, Dajla, Djay, Princeda, David de Smooth...

 

Mais il sait d’ores et déjà que le thème de prédilection qui lui tient à cœur, c'est celui des infamies humaines : guerres, famines, scandales... Sujet qu'il peut souligner par ses choix de couleurs sombres et intenses, et la précision des ombres et lumières qu’il crée par ses combinaisons de pochoirs. Jinks s'est trouvé et explore désormais différentes techniques picturales (peinture aérosol, acrylique appliquée au pinceau) et différents types de supports (mur, métal, toile, papier). Il combine les techniques du graffiti et du pochoir pour faire passer ses messages, qui mêlent souvent politique, humour et poésie.

 

Avide de découvertes, Jinks considère chacune de ses œuvres comme une expérience à part entière, tant dans la façon d'aborder son sujet que dans les techniques utilisées. Il se sent inscrit dans l'art de la rue et allie des références au graffiti à la technique du pochoir, dont Jef Aérosol, Bansky et Blek le Rat sont les représentants depuis les années 80.

 

En 2010 Jinks intègre l’association Humanit’Art en qualité de Président et Directeur Artistique du projet Raid au Niger. C’est cette même année que Jinks multiplie les expositions permanentes dans des galeries de Nantes, Dijon, Paris et Fontainbleau.

 

Born in March 1976 in Vevey, Switzerland, Jinks was inspired from childhood by the artistic work of his grandfather, a ceramic artist, and of his father, a photographer for Filipacchi. This early exposure to creativity educated and imbued his artistic sense and he naturally developed a keen eye for images that surrounded him.

In the late ‘80s, music and Rap culture began to play a highly influential part in Jinks’ life and it’s in 1994 that he became particularly captivated by music album covers glorifying Graffiti, especially the one of the album "Chromatique" by the group Sens Unik signed undery the label LAZOO (M.A.C).

Having a keen eye for images, Jinks is passionate about photography and video which led him to pursue todio-visual studies and follow several training courses as “Touche à tout” on France Télévision –French public tv-. His photographer work began at this time. He then work for several TV or cultural magazines, festivals, or for artists that captures his talent. And this artistic practice will never leave him.

In 2003, Jinks found himself ready to mob graffiti’s environment. It was at this point that he was named “Jinks” to humorously represent the "bad luck" that seemed to plague him!

Working with other graffers from Nantes, he went in search to discover Nantes - finding and documenting the local Graffiti and additionally photographing many urban areas of the city. That’s how, the next obvious pursuit for Jinks was the creation in 2004 of a website dedicated to the graffiti culture of Nantes. T.A.N.K. (Tous Artistes Nantais Konfondus - which means All merged artists from Nantes-). Successfully managed, this site proved to be highly popular having received one and a half million visitors by the end of 2009!

Not wanting to limit himself to Graffiti and wishing to contribute to the Hip Hop culture in Nantes, in 2005 with the help of friends, Jinks decided to launch a local fanzine covering up to date topics relating to various artists, events and Hip Hop music in general. This famous publication was entitled "Apocalypse Nantes" and has been delivered in 4 publications of 1000 copies.

At the same time, he will animate graffiti workshops in cultural centers of the region, for young people between 12 and 14 years old, this until 2009. His graffiti pratice will also be exercise for free-hand decorations or happenings sponsored by the city of Nantes, associations, corporations, festivals or privates. A way for Jinks to make his work enter the graffiti culture of the region in a long lasting way.

But it’s truly in 2007 that Jinks had THE CLICK that will start the beginning of his current work and his directions to present himself as a fully fledged artist. He discovered the work of Jef Aerosol and Logan Hicks, two famous stencil artists. He then inserts sketch stencils on some of his group’s frecos. Brimming with inspiration, he decided to express himself on canvas producing portraits of key personalities that impressed his political conscience both positively and negatively: Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and George Bush amongst others and of those he admired artistically such as Andy Warhol and Basquiat. He also paid tribute to artists from Nantes and was able to promote their work through his magazine: DJ Atom, Hocus Pocus, Dajla, Djay, Princeda David Smooth... to name a few.

But even then he knew in his heart that his preferred theme was that of human infamy: war, famine, corruption... Subjects that he highlights through his choice of dark and intense colours; the precision of light and shadow he is able to create resulting from his use of numerous layers of stencils. Jinks found hiself and now explore different pictoral techniques (aerosol painting, acrylic resin applied by brush) and different types of mediums (wall, metal, fabrics, paper, canvas).

Still eager to discover, Jinks considers each new work as an experiment in itself in the way of approaching and tackling his subject matter as well as in the techniques he uses. He feels enrolled in street art and combine his graffiti references to the stencil technique, whose Jef Aérosol, Bansky and Blek le Rat are the representants since the early 80’s.

 

in 2010  the  association  joined   Jinks   Humanit'Art  as   President / Artistic Director of the  Raid  project in Niger. The same year that Jinks multiplies the permanent exhibitions in galleries in Nantes, Dijon, Paris and Fontainbleau.
